President Salva Kiir has issued a decree, dismissing some of the judges who have been on strike for the past 2 months.

In the decree read on the state-run SSBC TV last evening, the President sacked 13 judges and justices.

The judges and justices have been on strike in demand for removal of Chief Justice Chan Reec Madut, who they say has failed to resolve their demands for allowances and better working conditions.

They insisted that they would not resume work until their demands were met.

As a result, the President formed a committee headed by the Minister of Justice, Paulino Wanawila, to look into the matter.

By then, the Minister of Information, Michael Makuei Lueth, who is a member of the committee, said the President wanted the judges and justices to give him more time to resolve their grievances.

In June, the committee said it had submitted its report to the President.

One of the judges, who spoke to Eye Radio Thursday, has confirmed the sackings, saying they have resolved not to speak to the media about the matter.

When contacted, the government spokesperson, Michael Makuei, also declined to comment.
