Teachers there have called off a strike and resumed work after the government made a budget to pay them half of their allowances, Jonglei minister of education has said.

The teachers had downed their tools, demanding chalk and house allowances. They had also threatened not to resume work until their dues are paid.

Last week, the state legislative assembly approved a budget to pay all civil servants half of their allowances together with their monthly salaries.

Tut Kony Nyang told the Dawn Program this morning that the state government agreed with the teachers that payment of their housing allowances will start this month.

“We also agreed that some issues that concern them such as the issue of permanent employment and the others issue related to allowances will be worked on,” said Mr Nyang.

Mr. Nyang said the teachers’ strike did not have much effect on the alternative examinations for students who were interrupted by the violence last December.

He said the exams were completed successfully and the marking process is ongoing.
