Jonglei: IDPs receive seeds to produce their own food

Internally Displaced Persons in areas affected by the conflict in Jonglei State are receiving seeds, agricultural tools and fishing kits from a humanitarian agency.

CARE International’s advocacy and communications officer, Daniel Alder, told Eye Radio that they want people to cultivate food for themselves instead of depending on relief aid.

“Right now, we’re mainly focused on providing lifesaving services, trying to keep people from getting sick from bad water, contaminated water and giving people the tools so that they can produce…food,” Mr Alder said.

“When those seeds are harvested, they will provide seeds for the next generation of crops.”

Mr. Alder said Care International hopes that the warring parties will implement the agreement, which was signed by President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar last week.

If the deal is implemented, he added, it would allow humanitarian agencies to reach people in the affected areas with lifesaving assistance.
