The Chamber of Commerce in Western Bahr El-Ghazal State says the prices of goods are high in the markets because of the costs of transport.

The chamber’s chairperson, Wol Charles said that traders are excessively taxed between Juba and Wau, and that is why they have increased the price of goods to compensate  for the custom charges.

“This is hard for us and we don’t know what to do, because of this prices are very high in the market. If a person wants to hire a car from Juba to Wau, they add 4,000 SSP that will be paid on the road on top of the car renting price”, he said.

However, the National Police Spokesperson, Colonel James Monday Enoka, said the road-blocks mounted on those roads are illegal. Police officers are not tax collectors and any collection being carried out has not been authorized by the Ministry of Interior.

Markets in South Sudan depend on goods being brought in from neighbouring East African countries, including Sudan.
