The Inspector General of Police Gen. Abraham Manyuat said one of his key priorities while in office is transforming the police force into a professional and decent law enforcement.

Gen. Manyuat was appointed by President Kiir in December 2024 in a major security reshuffle to succeed Gen. Atem Marol.

In an exclusive interview with Eye Radio on Thursday, Manyuat outlined his priorities and plans for reforming the police service in the country.

He outlined that police officers must operate effectively, respond promptly to incidents, and utilize available resources to maintain law and order.

Gen. Manyuat also said he plans to promote ethical conduct, discipline, and respect for human rights within the police force to foster public trust and improve community relations.

He stressed that police officers should enhance their legal understanding to ensure they apply laws correctly and uphold justice in their duties.

“Our priorities will focus on three or four things, one of which is qualifying the police in terms of efficiency, endurance, ethics, and behaviour,” he said.

“They should have knowledge of the laws, which is in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Law, and we will continue training them in various fields, and filtering out those who are not in good health from the service.”

General Manyuat further stated that his administration will ensure that police officers are equipped with the necessary work tools.

“We will work to ensure that they have the work equipment to do their job well, but above all, we will focus on the values and ethics of police work, and that they respect human rights.”

“They should not be part of corruption and are not corrupt, and they should also be helpful to women and children and elderly people, and this is the work that we will focus on.”
