The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management said it has purchased food and non-food items amounting to 20 million US dollars for the flood-affected populations in the country.

The shipment of containing at least 5,000 bags of sorghum, oil and mosquito nets among others were procured from neighboring Sudan.

The relief items will be distributed to those displaced by flash floods in the states of Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Western Bahr El Ghazal, and Unity.

The minister, Peter Mayen Majongdit said the consignment will arrive in the country through West Kordofan to Northern Bahr El Ghazal next week.

Mayen stated that the truckloads of food and non-foodstuff is the government’s response to the national emergency declared last month.

Addressing the media from the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Sunday, the minister called on the people to be resilient and supportive of one another.

“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs remains committed that the national emergency response is delivered. We started with food items and non-food items and fishing kits and others,” he said.

“This shipment today, which we have purchased from Sudan to be delivered to those affected by flood and climate change related events; because climate change is real and it can be seen.”

Authorities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State this week reported that the state populations, who are stranded or displaced by flooding, have not received any food or non-food aid despite government’s allocation of funds two months ago.

The state information minister, William Anyuon, appealed to the national government to provide medicine, food, and shelter for the displaced and affected populations.
