Governors’ term extended automatically-Parliament

The term of office for the state governors has been extended along with the mandate of the president until 2018, the chairperson of the information committee in the National Parliament has said.

On Tuesday, The National Legislature amended the national transitional constitution and also extended their mandate and that of the state assemblies for three years.

The amendment bill did not include the state governors.

Hon Thomas Wani Kundu says according to the constitution, the mandate of the governors has been extended automatically.

“Article 164 in the constitution didn’t talk about the governor’s period. The 164 article just talked about the state parliaments in the all ten states,” Hon Kundu explained.

“For this reason, the extension of the president and his government term automatically will extend the period of the ten governors for 3 years.”

The Council of Ministers proposed an extension of two years, but the MPs said more time is needed for the government to restore peace.
