GOSS calls for calm

The government has called for calm, but condemned the killing of the Ngok Dinka Paramount chief in Abyei region. Chief Kuol Deng Kuol, a UN peacekeeper and a civilian were killed in an attack involving Misseriya gunmen in Abyei on Saturday. Speaking to the press this morning, the minister of information, Doctor Barnaba Marial Benjamin said the Sudanese government must conduct an investigation into the issue and bring the culprit to book.
Doctor Marial added that the government urges UNISFA to also conduct an independent investigation into the incident. He said that the Abyei issue will still be left to President Salva Kiir and President Omar al-Bashir to discuss. Meanwhile, an official from the government of Sudan decried the killing of Chief Kuol Deng, and called for restraint. The US Ambassador to South Sudan, Susan Page has also called for an investigation into the incident and said that this is the ideal time to establish an administration in Abyei, and form a joint police force.
