Female lawyers asked to speak out on women issues

Women activists in Kajo-Keji County in Yei River State have urged female lawyers to be speaking out about challenges affecting women in the rural areas.

A concerned rural woman in Kajo-Keji County, Tembo Lidia, said women are still experiencing hardships, including rape, domestic violence, and ownership of properties.

“Women are being chased from their families without children and it gives a lot of trauma,” Ms Lidia said during a workshop in the county on human rights and good governance in Yei.

“Even talking, you cannot hear a voice of a woman lawyer. The women lawyers have not moved around to help us a lot.

“Once we have been heard, I think this is when the government can take action and help us.”

Earlier, the state Minister of Gender called on women in the rural areas to demand for their rights in the society.

The workshop brings together women representatives from different parts of the state. It has been organized by the civil society group, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization.
