The Governor of Upper Nile State says he does not support the call for federal system of governance in South Sudan.
He warns that it might split the country’s resources unfairly.
Governors of the three states of Equatoria say they support inclusion of federal system of governance in the permanent constitution of South Sudan, which will be drafted.
However, Governor Simon Kun Pouch, said people must be careful in their choice when they talk of federalism.
He said federalism would negatively affect the distribution of country’s resources such as oil and other minerals.
“People should be careful with federalism,” he warned. “If we go for federalism and we say let Upper Nile State go away with its oil many, people will cry.”
Upper Nile region which comprises of Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states is the oil-producing region in the country.
Governor Simon Kun was addressing police officers from Upper Nile State who graduated from the National Police Collage in Juba two weeks ago.
A federal system of government is one that divides the powers of government between the national (federal) government and state and local governments.
