Europe has provided more than $2 million to support the emergency response to South Sudanese refugees in Uganda.

The funds will be used to facilitate immunization, nutrition, water and sanitation projects.

The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department, had earlier offered 2 million dollars to UNICEF Uganda to facilitate activities in five districts which are hosting the refugees.

The department’s humanitarian advisor, for the Horn of Africa, Kenya and Uganda, Isabelle D’Haudt says part of the funds will be used to reach more than 200,000 children with measles and polio immunization.

There are close to 144,000 South Sudanese refugees in Uganda, with more than 70,000 of them being children.
