EU imposes sanctions on 2 South Sudan leaders

Author : | Published: Thursday, July 10, 2014

The European Union has imposed sanctions against two South Sudanese military leaders.

It says the individuals are ‘obstructing the peace process and responsible for atrocities’.

The two South Sudanese Military leaders will be named tomorrow.

“The legal acts, including the details of those subject to sanctions, will be published in tomorrow’s edition of the EU Official Journal,” read a press release.

The Council of the European Union says they will face a travel ban. And they won’t be able to access money and property in the EU.

It says the sanctions are part of wider European Union effort to stop violence and avoid further instability in South Sudan.

Adding that an existing arms embargo against the country will remain in place.

In May, the United States sanctioned the head of the Presidential Guards Unit along with a commander of opposition forces, for obstructing the peace process.
