The US Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, Donald Booth, has said he will work to ensure that South Sudan achieves its development goals.

His remarks came shortly after he held a meeting with President Salva Kiir in Juba, yesterday.

Mister Booth also re-enforced the US commitment to finding peaceful resolutions to outstanding issues between Juba and Khartoum.

“The US government (will) to try to help South Sudan achieve the development goals, and also to achieve that internal stability and internal peace, and we will continue to work on that and that is the reasons why am here,” he told state television and radio. “The role of the special envoy is to bring about the two countries Sudan and South Sudan in peace with each other as well as peace internally.”

Mr Booth also briefly addressed the issue of Abyei. “It is the very complex matter and the international community is working with Sudan and South Sudan to try and find the way forward and decision,” he said.

Earlier this week, Donald Booth met Sudanese officials in Khartoum.
