Election of the speaker should be through secret ballot, an SPLM in Opposition nominee for the transitional parliament speakership called.
Last week, the chairperson for information at the parliament, Oliver Mori, said the speaker would come from the ruling SPLM party, claiming that James Wani Igga stepped down for Dr Riek Machar, an SPLM-IO.
However, Honorable Henry Odwar says the agreement does not point out a specific party from which the speaker should come, but rather, provides for the position to be occupied by any qualified and competent person.
“What we want is the best person for the position of speakership, especially for this transitional period,” he said.
“This is what is scaring some people who would like to maintain the current status quo. I would like it to be a secret ballot and let the best be elected,” he added, with hope that the peace agreement would guide the process.
Early this month the SPLM Equatoria caucus at the legislature nominated four candidates for the position.
They are Anthony Lino Makana, Betty Oquaro, Luka Monoja and David Nailo.
