Dr Riek ‘wants to be a prime minister’

The President says the leader of the SPLM in Opposition has expressed the wish to become Prime Minister of South Sudan.

But Salva Kiir says this cannot happen unless the people of South Sudan amend the constitution.

President Kiir says this conversation happened when he met his former deputy Dr. Riek Machar in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, last month.

The president was addressing the people of Western Bahr El-Ghazal State, during the official opening of the Wau County headquarters, at Ngo Baggari yesterday.

“He said he wants to be a Prime Minister, but we don’t have the position of the Prime Minister in our constitution, and this can only happen if the constitution is amended,” said President Kiir.

“And the amendment of the constitution is not my work, and is you the people [of South Sudan] who will do that.”

Last month the President said there would be no interim government of national unity, unless he himself was part of it.

The government and the SPLM – In Opposition last month agreed in Addis Ababa to form an interim government by early next month.

  1. President Salva Kiir is out touch with the reality. He has committed genocide on innocent civilian in Juba, Bentiu, Bor in UN camp, Malakal and in Mapel. He can not be part of any government coz he has blood in his hands. As member of SPLM/SPLA-Resistant Movement, we are fighting for fundamental change in South Sudan. An overhaul security sector reform, public service reform, economic and land reform, writing of new constitution where federal system of governance is the basis of rule. Justice, accountability, freedom of expression rule of law, reconciliation and healing shall be the cornerstone of the New South Sudan. Salva Kiir and all his cohorts in Juba must be brought to justice for peace to prevail in South Sudan. Tribalism, nepotism, corruption, insecurity and poor leadership must come to and end.

  2. This is lair, Dr. machar cannot and will not follow Kiir no more. How would we trust Kiir who killed his civilian for no reason? How can we know that what happened in the past will not happen again under Kiir’s leadership? We cannot be misled two times, one is enough. We must fight to the last man and woman for change until we get that change my friend.
