Dr Riek ‘wants to be a prime minister’

The President says the leader of the SPLM in Opposition has expressed the wish to become Prime Minister of South Sudan.

But Salva Kiir says this cannot happen unless the people of South Sudan amend the constitution.

President Kiir says this conversation happened when he met his former deputy Dr. Riek Machar in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, last month.

The president was addressing the people of Western Bahr El-Ghazal State, during the official opening of the Wau County headquarters, at Ngo Baggari yesterday.

“He said he wants to be a Prime Minister, but we don’t have the position of the Prime Minister in our constitution, and this can only happen if the constitution is amended,” said President Kiir.

“And the amendment of the constitution is not my work, and is you the people [of South Sudan] who will do that.”

Last month the President said there would be no interim government of national unity, unless he himself was part of it.

The government and the SPLM – In Opposition last month agreed in Addis Ababa to form an interim government by early next month.
