A doctor has recommended that the Chief Editor of the Juba Monitor Newspaper be immediately released from police custody, says its Associate Editor, Anna Nimiriano.
On Friday, Alfred Taban was transferred from the National Security detention facility to a police cell in Juba.
On Tuesday this week, he was taken to the Juba Teaching Hospital, after he was allowed to be examined for his health condition following an appeal by civil society organizations.
According to Ms. Namiriano, the doctor said Mr. Taban’s health was deteriorating and recommended he be released.
He was diagnosed with malaria, Diabetes, high blood pressure and rheumatism. However, Ms. Nimiriano says the police have refused to set Alfred Taban free.
“Of course somebody with diabetes and high blood pressure has especial kind of food. He has to rest, but now, he cannot follow the instructions of the doctor because he still under detention at police here,” She told Eye Radio.
“So he started injection of malaria yesterday and even today as we as speaking here maybe after sometime we can take him even for injection.”
Ms. Anna is appealing to the government to release Mr. Taban due his deteriorating health condition.
Alfred Taban was arrested and detained in Juba on 16th of this month after he wrote an article criticizing the leadership of the Transitional Government of National Unity.
