US disappointed by continued failure to form TGoNU

The United States is disappointed by the continued failure of peace partners to form the interim government and implement the peace agreement, the Office of the Spokesperson of Department of State has said.

On Saturday, the government denied landing permission to flights for the return of opposition leader Riek Machar.

“This interference resulted in the failure to meet the deadline in the compromise proposal put forward by the regional and international partners of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission  that was agreed to by both sides,” said John Kirby in a statement.

“We have previously condemned obstruction by the IO, including the arbitrary demand by Riek Machar that more forces and heavy weapons than was previously agreed precede his arrival to Juba.”

The US Government also condemned Dr. Riek Machar for imposing additional conditions last week for his return to Juba, including the transportation more of his forces and weapons, contrary to what was previously agreed.

The US says it is committed to work with those who are sincerely dedicated to implementing the peace agreement, especially in the areas of security, public finances and reconciliation and accountability in future.

However, it says this will be determined by the commitment of the main parties to work together in the implementation of the peace agreement.

The two parties need to transport Dr Riek to Juba on their own to demonstrate that they are genuinely committed to peace.
