A community leader in Lasu Payam in Yei River County has been shot dead in his house by unknown gunmen.
Elder Loputu Lo-Baringi of Libogo Boma was attacked and killed last evening.
During a visit to the area after the killing, Yei River state Governor condemned the act in strongest terms.
Lokonga Moses appealed to all armed youth to return home and urged the SPLA command in the area to ensure protection of the civil population.
“The army should protect the civilians in the area. We are in peace and those boys in the bush are against peace,” Mr Moses said. “Those who killed the community leader are against peace.”
He also called on the Transitional Government of National Unity to look into the matter.
“I’m really very sorry for what has happened. I urged the national government to look into this issue.”
The incident comes just two weeks after a Slovakian sister identified as Veronika Rackova was shot in Yei town and later died of her wounds in Nairobi.
