UN Chief condemns Abyei attack

The UN Secretary General has called upon the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to bring to justice perpetrators of a latest attack in Abyei where an Ethiopian peacekeeper and a 6 year old child were killed.

Last week, the SPLM Secretary for Political Affairs in Abyei, David Kiir Zechariah, told Eye Radio that the two were killed in a shelling by the Sudanese army and the Misseryia tribesmen.

He said four children and another peacekeeper were injured in the Friday night shelling.

Sudan has not commented on the matter.

In a statement issued by the UN press office, Ban urged the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to bring the “unknown assailants” involved in the attack to justice. It noted that at least three civilians were also wounded.

Ki-moon “calls on (the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya) … communities to remain calm and avoid any escalation of this tragic incident,” the statement said.

He also urged both governments to resume their cooperation on the implementation of the Agreement on Temporary Arrangements for the Administration and Security of the Abyei area.
