The Council of Ministers has approved more than 26.5 million United States dollars for the emergency repatriation and reintegration of an estimated 20,000 vulnerable South Sudanese nationals stranded in Egypt.

The funding was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir, following a memo presented by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Albino Akol Atak.

The memo called for the urgent repatriation of vulnerable South Sudanese nationals living in poor conditions in Egypt.

According to a statement from the Office of the President, the funds will cover transportation, coordination with Egyptian authorities, documentation, reception and transit arrangements, humanitarian assistance and support for sustainable reintegration.

The government says it is also developing contingency arrangements to ensure returnees are brought home safely and receive support to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities.

A government delegation is expected to travel to Egypt to engage with Egyptian authorities and coordinate the repatriation process.

According to the South Sudan Embassy in Cairo, more than 100,000 South Sudanese are living in Egypt under varying legal and humanitarian circumstances.
