Bad human rights records equals bad SS’ Image: LS

A bad human rights record has given South Sudan a bad image, the Secretary-General of the Law Society has told Eye Radio.

“The human rights situation is not that good at all.  The image of our government, when it comes to human rights issues, is not good at all,” said Mr. Dong Samuel.

South Sudan has been ranked as number four in this year’s failed state index of 2013.

In the index, South Sudan was accused of gross human rights violations including rape, torture and unlawful execution.

Dong Samuel, who was speaking to Eye Radio’s morning Show today – which is the UN International Day for the Victims of Torture, said urged the government “to respect the transitional constitution, the bill of rights and all the international instruments and conventions which they said they will respect in the transitional constitution.”

“The government needs to rectify most of these international conventions and get committed to uphold to the rule of law in this country.”

South Sudan is expected to be admitted into the UN Human Rights organization in September.
