Ayod County commissioner in Jonglei State has raised a concern about severe cholera outbreak in rural parts of the flood-affected area, with 84 suspected cases and 47 related deaths.

In a letter to the state government, James Chuol Jiek said the crisis is escalating with high mortality rates in several payams amid lack of adequate response.

Mr. Chuol described the situation as dire due to poor hygiene created by widespread flooding, lack of vaccines and oral rehydration solutions to save lives.

He said the affected areas include Ayod town, Pagil Payam, Paguong Payam, and Pajiek Payam, with Pagil recording the highest death toll of 31 cases.

“The outbreak is severe, and it is extremely difficult to manage without medication,” he said.

“Our WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) status is critically poor, and no organizations are providing Wash or health-related support in the area.”

He appealed to the government and health partners to urgently intervene and provide medication and resources to combat the outbreak.

Commissioner Chuol stressed the urgent need for external support to contain the cholera crisis and prevent further loss of life.
