armed men terrify Twic East

The Commissioner of Twic East, Jonglei State, says some armed individuals are causing insecurity in the County.

Dau Akoi Jurkuch says county authorities have recorded a series of incidents by the gunmen since January, including lootings, beatings and sometimes killings.

He told Eye Radio that the recent incident occurred on Tuesday, when four people were injured while cultivating their land. Their food was looted.

Mr Dau alleged that soldiers of the former Cobra faction, who have been reintegrated into the SPLA, could be behind these acts.

“They don’t have salaries, yet they were integrated. So our accusation goes direct to the former [rebels] that these are the people who are now creating insecurity in Twic East County,” Mr Akoi said.

He appealed for intervention from the army general headquarters in Juba.

Eye Radio’s effort to contact David Yau Yau, who was the head of Cobra faction, have not been successful.

But the spokesperson of the SPLA says his office was yet to receive a report on the matter.

“The commissioner of that area….was a very senior officer in the SPLA. I’m sure he would be in the position to know to whom to report when he finds himself in that situation,” Brigadier Lul Ruai Koang stated.

He added that SPLA soldiers in Jonglei were confined in military outposts; those who move around without permission are punished accordingly.
