Amnesty International Kenya has expressed grave concern over the reported abduction of Kenya-based, South Sudanese businessman Athorbey Al‑Gaddhaffy‑Dit, also known as Gadafi Athorbey Guet, who was forcibly taken from Nairobi in the early hours of Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
According to a statement signed by Amnesty International Kenya Section Director George Morara, credible information indicates that Mr. Gaddhaffy‑Dit was taken by armed, masked individuals at approximately 3:00 a.m.
The human rights organization stated it believes the businessman is currently detained at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ahead of an imminent deportation to South Sudan, posing a severe threat to his life, safety, and fundamental rights.
Morara stated that the incident bears the hallmarks of an enforced disappearance, which constitutes a grave violation under both Kenyan and international law.
“Such actions are illegal, unacceptable, and incompatible with a democratic society governed by the rule of law,” Morara said.
Amnesty International reminded all state agencies that every person within Kenyan jurisdiction is entitled to liberty, security, protection from arbitrary arrest, and immediate access to legal counsel and family.
The organization emphasized that any individual suspected of an offense must be processed through the formal Kenyan justice system rather than subjected to abduction, incommunicado detention, or deportation.
The rights group issued a list of urgent demands to the Kenyan authorities, including the immediate disclosure of Mr. Gaddhaffy‑Dit’s whereabouts, guarantees for his physical safety, and unhindered access to his legal representatives and family.
Amnesty International Kenya further called for a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into the abduction to ensure full accountability for the perpetrators, regardless of their rank or institutional affiliation.
The statement concluded with an urgent appeal to relevant authorities to intervene immediately and halt his removal from Kenyan jurisdiction, noting that every hour without information increases the risk of irreparable harm.
