27 detectives from different police stations in juba completed a two-day workshop on how to investigate cases of Sexual Gender-based Violence.

The workshop brought together investigators from 7 police stations including Gumbo Sherikat, Munuki, Mauna, central, North and South.

The two-day workshop was meant to raise the efficiency of the investigators in the rights of litigants before the court and to expedite the decision and settlement of cases.

Speaking to Eye radio on Saturday, the Chairperson of Women’s Equity Organization, Yasmine Ahmed Khamis said the workshop achieved its intended goal.

“We talked about the role of the detective and how to carry out his duties and responsibilities on how to investigate gender-related issues,” she said.

According to Yasmine, the investigators raised the difficulties and challenges facing them in documenting and processing SGBV crime cases.

“For example, the values of crimes in the prosecution office take a lot of time, but now they understand that the delay must happen. They now understand the importance of the evaluation so that the prosecution has full supervision of the case file.”

The workshop was organized by Women’s Equity, an organization supported by the German Catholic Organization for Development Cooperation to provide legal aid to survivors of sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

According to a UNDP report, South Sudan is faced with problems of inadequate access to justice for GBV survivors and victims.

The situation, attributed to a backlog of cases resulting from limitations in judicial and legal aid, has led to lengthy periods of pre-trial detention, delayed justice, and a culture of impunity.
