The government has relaxed the dawn-to-dusk curfew it declared two weeks ago. Residents of Juba will now be allowed to move freely until 8pm instead of 6pm.

Central Equatoria State Police Commissioner Major-General Abraham Manyuat told Eye Radio that the two hours’ extension will give the residents of Juba more time to go home in the evening. Major-General Manyuat also warned organized forces against shooting in the air during New Year celebrations in Juba city.

He said that any member of the police or regular forces found shooting in air will be prosecuted. “Nobody is allowed to fire a gun at this time (…) even if unintentionally. I repeat: the police and the army, and all the organized forces that were deployed in the town, must keep security,” Manyuat said. Civilians have also been advised not to fire crackers during New Year’s celebrations. Patrolling forces will stop anyone moving about after eight o’clock.
