The Commissioner of Duk County in Jonglei State says some 68,000 people have been displaced by a recent attack.

Elijah Mocnom says that Riek Machar forces launched an attack in Duk County on Monday, killing two people and displacing thousands of others.

The military spokesperson of the SPLA-in Opposition, Brigadier Lul Ruai, has denied that their forces carried out the attack on Duk County.

Mr Mocnom told Eye Radio that people are still moving to Twic East.

“Sixty eight thousand people are now displaced in all the payams of Duk County and they are coming directly to Panyagor. Sixty eight thousand people are moving out, that means the county is empty. These people who are displaced in Duk County are now coming from Duk Padiet to Panyagor and they will also be coming to Bor. They [the attackers] have destroyed Mareng headquarters and everything in the area,” Commissioner Mocnom explains.

Mr Mocnom added that the IDPs fear losing their children to hunger.

He said the attackers looted and burned down houses and buildings, including the Lost Boys’ Hospital in Duk Payuel which is the main hospital for eye surgery for all the people in the state.
