Authorities in Unity State say 53 head of cattle have died from an unknown disease in two separate incidents recorded over the weekend.

The Director of Veterinary Services at the State Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Dr. Gai Chuol Baden, said the first deaths were reported in Marial area of Guit County, while a second incident is still under verification.

“A total of 53 head of cattle died, but we do not know the reason behind the deaths. These animals died suddenly, and we need to investigate the matter to determine the cause,” Dr. Gai said.

He said veterinary teams have been deployed to investigate the cause of the deaths and are collecting samples for laboratory testing.

“If there are technical teams from Juba or from petroleum companies, they can also go and assist in investigating the cause of these deaths.”

He urged livestock owners to report any unusual sickness or sudden deaths among animals as investigations continue.
