3 die, 7 wounded in Juba’s night-time protests: says police

South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) has confirmed the death of three people and wounding of seven others during protests in different residential areas in Juba and Aweil in Northern Bahr el Ghazal on Thursday night.

Dozens of youth took to the streets in seven neighborhoods in Juba to voice their anger against reports of South Sudanese nationals killed allegedly by the Sudanese army in Wad Madani city, police spokesperson, John Kassara Koang said.

Col Kassara revealed that the violent demonstration started at around 8:00 PM and shops were looted, while the casualties were sustained in confrontation with security forces.

“On 16th Jan 2025, a demonstration was carried out by an unidentified group of South Sudanese in Juba specially in Gudele One, Gudele Two, Mangateen, Jebel Dinka, Jaborona, New Site, and Nyakuron residential area. The incident resulted into shooting and injury of 7 people and 3 persons killed meanwhile Shops were looted,” he said.

In his delayed security update, the police official added that the victims were admitted at Juba teaching hospital for medical treatment.

He added that a similar incident happened in Awiel town particularly in Hai Salam, Naivasha, Maderia which resulted into burning of 3 houses that belong to Sudanese nationals in Mathiang residential area.

“The motive behind the demonstration in the two towns of Juba and Awiel is related to the killing of innocent South Sudanese citizens in Wad Medani by the Sudan Army Forces,” he said.

Col Kassara further added that the police managed to rescue 45 Sudanese traders in Juba, adding that they are currently at the police stations.

“I’m assuring the people of South Sudan and all the foreign nationals that the police will continue in its mandate of protecting the lives and the properties of the people both in Juba and within other towns of South Sudan.”
