14 killed in cattle-related attack in Duk County

At least 14 people were killed, and 18 others injured during cattle raiding incident in Duk County of Jonglei State on Thursday, a local official confirmed.

Duk commissioner, Peter Latjor Chuol said a group of armed youth stormed the area and walked away with about 7,000 herds of cattle.

Commissioner Latjor who describes the incident in Payuel Payam as unfortunate, added that most of the casualties are young people.

“The incident occurred yesterday (Thursday) in Poktap Boma of Payuel Payam. This incident, the death toll has now reached 14 youth and the wounded are 18 and the attackers ……went with thousand herds of cattle,” Latjor told Eye Radio.

He reported that health personnel are treating the other 18 wounded, most who are battling for their lives. The local official reiterated calls for comprehensive countrywide disarmament.

Commissioner Latjor said some of the wounded will be transferred to Juba for further medical attention.

Phillip Thon Leek, a member of national parliament, condemned the incident and urges the government to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

“I condemn this incident in the strongest terms and the government should comprehensively ensure peace in South Sudan, we cannot talk about peace when people are dying daily. People are dying daily in Duk”.
