Zuma tells Riek to reverse war calls

Author : | Published: Wednesday, October 12, 2016

The South African President is urging Dr Riek Machar to reverse his call for an arms resistance against the Transitional Government of National Unity.

President Jacob Zuma says a call for new violence will worsen the situation for the people of South Sudan and plunged the country into total chaos.

President Zuma was speaking during a joint press briefing with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi, on Tuesday.

“Fighting will only exacerbate the human suffering in South Sudan,” Mr Zuma stated.

He called on Dr. Riek to pursue peace by returning to Juba:

“We call on Dr Riek Machar to go to Juba and participate in the Transitional Government.”

Zuma said they have agreed with the government of Kenya to engage the leaders of South Sudan in meaningful dialogue that will address the crisis.
