Zimbabwe tycoon Wicknell Chivayo and wife killed in helicopter crash

• • 2 min read

Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, have been killed in a helicopter crash that claimed six lives.

The helicopter crashed on Wednesday evening in the Marondera area, about 70 kilometres east of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare.

Police said all six people on board died in the crash. Two of those on board were pilots.

Chivayo’s family confirmed his death, with family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo telling Zimbabwe’s state broadcaster that the family was devastated by the tragedy.

The cause of the crash has not yet been established, and police say investigations are underway. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana confirmed that the helicopter was carrying a prominent businessman, three other passengers and two pilots.

Chivayo, popularly known as “Sir Wicknell”, was the managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe and was widely known for his high-profile lifestyle and close relationships with prominent African political and business figures.

He also attracted public attention through government contracts, philanthropy and social media posts showing him giving luxury vehicles and large amounts of money to musicians and other public figures.

One of his major business projects was a 172-million-dollar solar power project in Gwanda, awarded to Intratrek by the Zimbabwe Power Company.

Chivayo had also faced scrutiny over some of his business dealings, but he denied allegations of wrongdoing.

Kenyan President William Ruto has paid tribute to Chivayo, describing him as a dear friend and extending condolences to the families of those killed.
