Yei man detained for reportedly defiling a baby

A 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly defiling two-year old baby in Yei Town.

Charles Hakim was caught in the act by local residents in Sube suburb and handed over to the police.

The little girl is said to be one year and nine months old.

“She was examined and found that she has some internal cracks in the urinary system,” said her father John (real name withheld).

He expressed disappointment over the tragic incident. He called on relevant authorities to take tough action against the man.

“I’m very worried and I want this person to be held until my child gets okay.”

Meanwhile, a social worker at Yei Gender Department, Unia Atai, has condemned the act.

“This person’s case should be taken into serious consideration. If not, we as women of Yei will imprison this person,” Ms Atai told Eye Radio.

She went on to appeal to parents to look after their children:

“When you’re going to the market or workplace, you should know that your child is left with somebody responsible. You should know your neighbors.”

The gender and police desks have reported that rape cases related minors are on the rise in Yei River County. However, they couldn’t avail any figures.

It’s unclear when the accused will be arraigned in court.

Laws protecting children against sexual abuse are unclear in South Sudan.

Besides, South Sudan is one of the only two countries in the world that have not ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international treaty that legally obligates nations to protect children’s rights.
