Yambio: Gov’t, armed group to sign deal

Mediators of a peace process in the former Western Equatoria State say the final agreement between the government and an armed group will be signed today.

The signing ceremony was initially scheduled for Thursday, but mediators say it failed because President Salva Kiir was still reviewing the documents.

The group known as the South Sudan National Liberation Movement refused to sign the deal last year, saying it didn’t have the support of the Office of the President.

This resulted in more violence in and around Yambio.

“I’ve no fear that the process is going to go ahead because the president himself is highly involved and he has assigned very serious officials of the government to be in this process,” said chief mediator Hiboro Kusala, the Bishop of Tambura -Yambio.
