The Commission of the African Union has commended the progress made towards the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity, following the return to Juba of the SPLM in opposition senior officials.

22 Generals from the opposition arrived in Juba last week to take part in the joint security arrangements. 39 more soldiers later followed and some 130 others are expected in Juba today.

The African Union Chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamin-Zuma welcomed their arrival in the capital.

In a statement, she says this is an encouraging step towards easing the return of the first Vice president Designate, Dr. Reik Machar.

She noted with appreciation the cordial manner in which the government received the SPLA iO officials.

Ms Zuma emphasized that the step is a necessary assurance that should be used to reconcile the country and bring peace, stability and development.

The African Union expressed its firm commitment to support the return of the SPLM-IO protection forces to Juba.

The first batch of 40 protection troops from the opposition also arrived in Juba early this week.
