Y-Peer launches a campaign to empower youth

A peer education network has launched a campaign to empower young people in the country.

The Youth-Peer says the campaign will reduce vulnerability and risks among young people in the country.

It aims to educate young people about the dangers of teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and other health issues.

The theme for the campaign is “Empowering young people and improving their health through peer to peer approach.”

The coordinator for Youth Peer Education Network in Central Equatoria State, Sarah Benjamin, says the activist group needs financial support to achieve its objectives.

“I want to call all the organizations to help us for funding or for a place or for car, for the sanitary pads for girls. Many girls need sanitary pads but it is not there,” said Ms Sarah.

The group gets financial support from UNFPA and ADRA.

The United Nations Fund for Population Activities program officer for reproductive health, Mary Juan Marle, says UNFPA is committed to support youth programs.

“UNFPA value young people very much. It is one of the areas that UNFPA is putting a lot of effort to ensure that the youth of this country have their rights addressed especially we are looking at the area of sexual and reproductive health,” Ms Marle added.

The Y-Peer is a non-profit organization formed in 2008 with the aim of establishing an informed, peaceful, self-sustained and meaningful network that enhances youth health and their well-being.
