The South Sudan Wild Life Conversation Society has called for a quick enactment of laws to punish poachers and animal traffickers.
It says the absence of the laws is encouraging theft and killing of wild animals across the country.
In February, 30 people, including 19 soldiers were arrested in Bandinglo in national park in Gbudwe State for poaching.
The Deputy Program Director of the Wild Life Conservation Society, Michael Lopidia, told Eye Radio that it would be difficult to address poaching without effective laws regulating the sector.
“We need to show that we are a nation; we know what regulations and laws are. Any person who has been apprehended should be investigated and prosecuted,” Mr Lopidia stressed.
The statement comes as South Sudan joins the rest of the world today to mark the Environment Day.
This year’s World Environment Day is being celebrated under the theme: “Join the race to make the world a better place.”
However, South Sudan is marking the day under the sub-theme: “Zero tolerance for wildlife trafficking.”
