The Warrap State Government has welcomed a renewed effort by the national government to resolve the long-running border dispute between the Marial Wau and Apuk Giir communities.

A high-level national peace committee led by the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Defence, Gen. Gregory Vasili, is expected to arrive in Kuajok today to address the border dispute in Manyang area.

The committee will travel to Matiel Payam in Gogrial East County to assess the situation and begin mediation between the affected communities.

In a statement issued yesterday, the state Ministry of Information and Communication Services said the government appreciates the ongoing community-led peace initiative aimed at restoring peaceful coexistence between the neighbouring communities from Western Bahr el Ghazal and Warrap states.

The statement said a delegation of sons and daughters from the Apuk Giir and Marial Wau communities met Warrap State Governor Bol Wek Agoth in Juba on Sunday to brief him on progress made in the grassroots peace initiative.

The delegation will include members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly representing the area and representatives from the affected communities.

The government said the initiative will support the work of the technical committee recently formed by the governors of Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal states to find a lasting solution to the Manyang crisis.

It added that the peace mission follows presidential directives issued on January 16, 2024, calling for efforts to resolve the recurring conflict.

The Warrap State Government urged youth and community leaders from both Apuk Giir and Marial Wau communities to cooperate with the peace committee to promote safety, stability, and lasting peace in the area.
