VP speaks against tax fraud in CES

Vice President James Wani Igga has directed the Central Equatoria State government officials to put an end to abuse of tax laws.

He said politicians in the country are taking advantage of the gaps in enforcing the tax laws to steal public funds.

Mr Igga said proper tax collection will improve the economic growth.

“Loopholes in tax laws that are exploited by politicians, by the lawyers, by accountants and tax collectors should closely be studied and put to an end,” said the VP.

Mr Igga said tax officers should stop tax exemptions without the approval of the parliament.

He said tax collection should be streamlined to increase revenue collection.

“Consolidate tax administration into a single entity,” he suggested.

“Major professionalization of tax officers, training and recruitment and people must be transferred, payments to be made to banks; not in cash.”

The Vice President also directed for establishment of a unit to audit tax collection.
