Insecurity affects Mongalla school attendance

The Commissioner of Mongalla County in Jubek State has raised concern with the low enrolment of children in schools.

Elario Paul says there about 150 children in primary schools in the whole county, which is lower compared to more than 500 last year.

He said the recent attack on Mongalla forced many families to leave their homes with their children, who have not returned yet.

“We have eight classes and in those classes, there are only 112 pupils. And we have another church school called St. Thomas; the pupils there are only 30-something,” Mr Elario said.

He urged all the parents to take their children back to school.

According to the General Education Minister, Deng Deng Hoc, about 1.8 million children are not in schools all over the country.

He said the majority of these children are in the rural areas, where girls are prevented from going to school.

However, a survey by the Ministry and partners show that the rate of class attendance for both primary and secondary schools has doubled this year compared to last year.
