The United Nations says more than 1,000 civilians are now sheltering inside its base in Abiemnom following a surge in violence that has left at least 23 people wounded.
According to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), unidentified armed youth attacked the Abiemnom county headquarters early this morning, injuring dozens and forcing residents to flee for safety.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, UN peacekeepers opened their base to civilians seeking protection and are providing emergency medical care to those injured in the attack.
UNMISS says it is alarmed by escalating violence in the Ruweng Administrative Area and is calling on all parties to exercise restraint and protect civilians.
