The UN Mission in South Sudan says it has begun the relocation of about 20,000 IDPs from Tongpiny to a new camp in Jebel area in Juba.
The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Hilde Johnson says the IDP camp at Tongpiny will be closed in May.
Madam Johnson told the media yesterday that hundreds of IDPs have already been moved to a new site which is currently still under construction.
“We have some 3,000 spaces available in the UN House where drainage and sanitation conditions are better, and the security arrangements even more robust than at the Tongpiny UNMISS base,” she said.
Madam Johnson said that UNMISS would not facilitate any movement of people wishing to take refuge in other countries.
UNMISS premises in Juba, Bor, Bentiu and Malakal host as many as 85,000 civilians, mostly women and children.
