UNDP donates two bikes, 6 analog phones to NBGs police

The United Nations Development Program has supplied equipment and mobility means to the police Special Protection Unit in North Bhar el Ghazal State to facilitate their operations and response to crimes.

The donation of two motorbikes for police officers, 6 analog phones, and mattresses for defendants, among others, will help the police unit and the community to coordinate response to Gender-Based Violence incidents in the State.

Aweil Police Commissioner Major General Philip Madut Tong commended the donatio saying it is not the first time the police receive support from UNDP.

“They provided motorcycles for the police in the department to quickly reach the crime scenes. They also provided mattresses for litigants in gender cases who were arrested or accused of using them to sleep,” General Madut said.

“For the phones, there will be five telephones in the different departments and one in the head police station to facilitate communication.”

On his part, George Kadimba, the Security Specialist at UNDP said the donation is part of UNDP’s support to tackle GBV challenges in the state.

“As you know, UNDP is supporting community security, and every time we had a meeting with the community. One of the challenges they have is contacting the police, that why we provide this desk phones to be deployed in all the police station so every time member of the public and to call the police can be available,” said Kadimba.

“We also provide motorcycles to police to ease the investigation of Gender-Based Violence-related cases. One of the things we provide also is police form 8 as one of the challenges raised by the community.”

In the recent years, there has been spiking cases of Gender-Based Violence reported in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.
