Former SSBC director Adil Faris Mayath (-).
The Union of Journalists of South Sudan has condemned the disappearance of Adil Faris Mayath, a freelance journalist and former director of state-run television, SSBC.
Mr. Faris was reported missing in Juba on 23rd January 2025 – and wife Amira Al-Nahawi said his disappearance is a serious and concerning situation.
According to Amira, there has been no response from the authorities or any updates on the search for her husband and warned his nearly a week-long disappearance means various stakes.
In a press statement, the journalists body said it acquired preliminary information that suggested Mr. Faris was taken to an unspecified custody on 23rd January over undisclosed reasons.
UJOSS said it strongly condemns the detention of the journalist without due process or notifying their families.
The watchdog further called on security agencies involved in Mr. Faris’ detention to expedite investigations, grant him access to his family and lawyer, and adhere to the legal procedures outlined in the country’s transitional constitution.
The statement cited articles 12, 19, and 24 of the constitution that guarantee civil liberty, fair trial, and freedom of expression.
UJOSS also urged immediate dialogue with security authorities to address underlying concerns, with the Media Authority as a mediator.
The written statement also called for constructive engagement which will ensure journalists’ rights are upheld while addressing security concerns lawfully.
Further, the union echoed its readiness to engage in dialogue and cooperation to foster a safe and enabling environment for journalists which is vital South Sudan’s democratic and peacebuilding processes.
South Sudan laws provide that all detainees – whether arrested by the police or the security services – are accorded basic rights.
The constitution provides that the person should be taken before a court within 24 hours of arrest.
