The United States Ambassador to South Sudan has announced 288 million dollars in new funding to support humanitarian assistance in South Sudan.

Ambassador Michael Adler said Wednesday that USAID is donating $.288m to the World Food Programme to provide food and nutrition assistance to 2.2 million needy South Sudanese.

He made the pledge in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State during an occasion to celebrate the life of American aid-worker and former envoy Roger Winter.

“The US Agency for International Development will provide this funding to the UN world food program to deliver food and nutrition assistance to nearly 2.2 million people,” Adler said.

“I am immensely proud of the work USAID does on behalf of the American people…. here in South Sudan, and I am also deeply proud of our strong partnership with WFP who have done so much for so many in the world’s most challenging environment.”

USAID remains South Sudan’s single largest donor since its creation in 2011.

Ambassador Adler also paid tribute to late American humanitarian worker Roger Winter, who was buried in Maryland in the United States of America on Saturday last week.

Roger, regarded as a friend of South Sudanese for his bold advocate for the country’s independence, died in the US on January 25, 2023, at the age of 79 years.

Former SPLM Secretary-General, Pagan Amum Okiech, described Roger as a steadfast supporter of the cause of the people of South Sudan.
