Three drown in floodwaters of Mundri West

Three people including a child of three years drowned and nearly 40,000 people have been affected by flash-floods in Mundri West County of Western Equatoria State.

According to Relief and Rehabilitation Coordinator of the area, two adults and a 3-year-old have drowned in Amadi Payam since the flood occurred.

“There was two people who died in Amadi payam because of the flood, there is a woman who got drowned and also a man who got drowned in Amadi payam. We are also hearing that this morning that there is a small child also got drowned this morning, also in the same Amadi Payam,” he told Eye Radio.

Friday also reports that more than 6,600 houses have been washed away by floodwater in four payams in the area.

“There was an assessment which was made then resulted came out that there were about 6,381 households and 39,000 population that were affected really, in different way yeah.”

South Sudan marks its fourth year of the worst flood catastrophe in decades since 1964.

From May this year, heavy rains swelled and burst riverbanks; flooding settlements and displacing thousands of people to higher grounds in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Unity, Warrap, Jonglei, Upper Nile and Western Equatoria State.

Nearly seventy people died due to flood-related causes and hundreds of thousands are displaced in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State in two months, according to local authorities.

Two weeks ago, the government declared flood-affected parts of the country as national disaster areas, and appeals to humanitarian organizations and well-wishers to render assistance.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has allocated 16.7 million US dollars for emergency flood response and contracted 25 national companies to supply food and non-food items to floods affect populations across the country.
