The SPLM’s Political Bureau has removed the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and Pagan Amum from its membership and declared the completion of the party’s reunification process.

The resolutions were passed on Thursday night following the party’s political bureau meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir.

Dr. Machar was the deputy chairperson of the SPLM while Amum was the party Secretary General before the 2013 civil war.

However, following the conflict, Machar formed what is now known as SPLM-IO, while Pagan later formed The Real SPLM.

Speaking to the State-run broadcaster on Thursday, the acting SPLM Secretary-General said the party decided to restructure the party and fill in positions held by Dr. Machar and Amum because they have formed their own parties.

Peter Lam Both also said the Political Bureau meeting also recommended the replacement of members of SPLM who have died or joined other political parties.

“The Political Bureau also recommends to the national liberation council the replacement of Comrade Pagan Amum and Comrade Riek Machar from the structure of the SPLM as they already forfeited from their memberships by establishing other political parties,” said the acting SPLM secretary general.

The party has also resolved to increase the Political Bureau membership to 35.

According to Lam, SPLM has so far registered more than 4.5 million members across the country.
