Speed up Machar’s return to Juba, US tells South Sudan peace partners

The US Government has urged the main parties to the peace agreement to quickly finalize security arrangements for the return of Dr. Riek Machar.

It also welcomed the appointment of Dr. Riek Machar as First Vice President by President Salva Kiir.

The Deputy Spokesperson of the State Department, Mark Toner says the appointment of Dr. Riek is a positive step in the implementation of the peace agreement.

“This move, while belated, is a necessary step forward in the implementation of the peace agreement,” Mr Toner said in a media brieing.

“The US Government urges both sides to quickly finalize the security arrangements of Machar’s return to Juba, and to form a Transitional Government of National Unity, allowing South Sudan to return to a path towards peace and reconciliation,” he said.

Earlier, Dr. Riek Machar said he would come to Juba soon after the establishment of a joint force in the city.
