South Sudan’s national basketball team faces a monumental challenge today in Luanda, Angola, taking on Senegal in a crucial AfroBasket quarter-final. The winner of the high-stakes clash will advance to face Nigeria.
This is no ordinary matchup; it marks a turning point for the Bright Stars. who are still seeking to cement their place among the continent’s basketball heavyweights after a dramatic group stage journey.
South Sudan entered the tournament with high hopes following their historic appearance at the World Cup, but the group stage proved challenging.
The team managed one victory against two defeats, including a heartbreaking two-point loss to hosts Angola in their final game.
That narrow defeat relegated them to third place in their group, though their spirited performance showed resilience and fighting character until the final buzzer.
Senegal, on the other hand, displayed more consistency, finishing second in their group with two wins and a single loss.
The Lions of Teranga are known for their physical style of play, strength in the paint, and experience in continental competitions, qualities that make them dangerous opponents in the knockout stages.
As the knockout rounds begin, four nations stand out as top contenders, each having swept the group stage with a perfect 3–0 record: Egypt, Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, and Nigeria.
The bracket is not kind to South Sudan, as the winner of their clash with Senegal will face powerhouse Nigeria in the semifinals.
In the Quarter-final Matchups, Cape Verde will play Tunisia and the winner to face Angola. While Congo will face Cameroon for the Winner of the match to play with Egypt. However, Guinea will play for the winner, and Mali to face Côte d’Ivoire.
The tournament will take place from 12 to 24 August, featuring 16 nations competing for the title of African champions.
South Sudan, Africa’s highest-ranked team on the FIBA Men’s World Ranking, steps into Afro Basket as one of the continent’s most exciting favourites, buoyed by their historic debut at the Paris Olympic Games.
But their campaign has not been without setbacks; surprise losses to Mali and DR Congo in qualifying served as a sobering reminder that no team is invincible.
